Degrees of Independence: National disability conference to be held by Huddersfield Students’ Union
The University of Huddersfield Students’ Union (UHSU) is to again host a specialised conference for students with disabilities in April.
The conference was last year hosted jointly between UHSU and students’ unions in Manchester, Salford and Sheffield.
This year, Degrees of Independence, organised by UHSU VP Education & Welfare, Haneef Rashid and Hull Students Union VP Welfare Alice Marshall will allow for organic debate around the skills and technology needed to support disabled university students.“This is an important event for disabled students and an important event for Huddersfield,” said Rashid. “This is the first conference of its kind to be hosted by a Students’ Union and we are proud that Huddersfield is able to provide a platform to the rest of the country for healthy debate and discussion.”100 delegates will be able to attend the conference, hosted in Huddersfield on 9 April 2010, with an evening of entertainment planned for 8 April that will allow attendees to interact and network before the conference.“Ensuring education is inclusive for disabled students makes us think creatively about the way we do things, which is good for everyone,” said Dr Janet Hargreaves, Associate Dean of the University’s Human and Health Sciences school. “I am very excited that the UHSU are promoting Huddersfield as a place where we listen to and work collaboratively with all students to improve their experience.” “The conference will be a great opportunity to debate disability issues and challenge current practice in order to make a real difference to policy and practice locally and nationally.”
• The University of Huddersfield Students’ Union Disabilities Officer is Michael Mattinson who works part-time to ensure students with disabilities are represented. He has been working closely with Rashid to organise the logistics of the event.
• The UHSU will be the sole host of this year’s event and will contain a keynote speech from NUS Disabilities Officer Adam Hyland
