Don’t know what we’re talking about? Well here is a little FAQ to help.
The Union Council consists of 26 elected officers, who are elected in the March General Elections and November By-Elections held every year, and consists of the 5 Sabbatical Officers, 11 Non-Sabbatical Officers and 10 Union Councillors.
Their jobs differ depending on their title, but in Union Council there is a Union Chair who leads the Council, and 18 other officers who are able to vote on policy that is brought to the Union Council. These officers, with the exception of the 5 Sabbatical Officers, are also mandated to scrutinise the choices of the Sabbatical Officers and the general running of the Students’ Union in the Council Meetings.
The Union Chair calls the Union Council meetings as close to the first week of each month as possible and sets the agenda for the meeting. All motions or proposals for discussion must go through her or him, with a proposer and a seconder who are willing to speak on the issue. These do not have to be elected officials! Students can put motions to council or propose a discussion on a topic that they believe to be in need of a discussion or actions.
Unfortunately, the Constitution requires certain things such as quoracy and voting on any changes to the agenda, as well as most things on the agenda, but in general the meetings are interesting and have the sole intention of giving the students their say in the big choices that the Students’ Union makes. Feel like having your say? Come along!

Anyone and everyone with a UHSU and NUS logo on their cards – you can even request a printed agenda to make notes on prior to a meeting as a normal student because the sole point of the council is for students to get involved.
Obviously we’re going to say yes, but why don’t you come down and find out?
