► Saiqa Ahmed - Diversity - VP Education
I am a student at the University of Huddersfield and I have completed my Law degree, currently studying on the Postgraduate Legal Practice Course, therefore, I have been a student at the university for more than four years and have a good understanding of how the university operates and understand the needs of students.
I am currently a student representative for my course, a Union Councillor at the Students Union and also the Deputy Chair, which are quite different but very fulfilling experiences that I have which all link to one key aim, and that is to represent the students by being their voice by trying to resolve any issues or problems that they have.
This is my second year as a student representative, and my first year as a Union Councillor for which I was elected for by your votes, to attend meetings at the student’s union where important decisions are made on behalf of the students, allowing me to have a voting right and also a right to bring proposals forward for any changes that you may want as students.
I would like to do this on a full time basis by becoming the VP Education, which would entail being in touch with the student’s on a more one-to-one basis, making the experience more personal and with assisting students from all different schools rather than being a representative for my school.
I feel that my key motivator to become VP Education officer is the students and I know I would be the ultimate candidate for the role based on my experience as a student for longer than five years, student rep for two years, and Union Councillor for one year and purely because I know I would give everybody an equal right to be heard and help fight for and support students whenever and wherever they need me. I believe that it is not just a competition of making yourself aware to the students of who you are but also to make the students aware of what you have done for them and what you can do for them in the future.
I have on a voluntary basis attended monthly meetings at the Union Council to vote for or against changes that have been imposed to affect students at the university, I have also voluntarily attended meetings as a student representative for students on my course and also attended meetings on behalf of part time students to discuss how changes can be made to make things better for them as well as full time students, and I have also taken part in the tuition fees debate by attending parliament and representing the University of Huddersfield’s student’s views on the increased on tuition fees, alongside Sabbatical officers.
Universities are an educational institution where students come to attain qualifications in order to further develop their careers. I strongly believe that it is those students like me who experience student life that could help in making the university a better and more exciting place to study. By becoming the Education officer it would mean that I get to meet you on a personal and daily basis and more importantly, hear what you say and be able to act on it.
Therefore, I would really appreciate it if you could please support me in my efforts to help improve the Students Union for you.
